I'm not a Potter fan - I've never even read the books - but my gorgeous and talented friend Ragdoll is, and she posted this recently to her Livejournal:

glockgal is one of my fave fan artists (and she did the awesome Bill/Tonks/Kingsley for me at weasley_fest last year so if she never did anything else again, I would love her). But she's recently started doing Beatles fanart along with her other favourite things. She just posted this which is just...incredible. Of course, now I've got stoned 'pudlians muttering "Where's the bus?" in ridiculous voices in my head, but it's all groovy, man, groovy. Too damn cute. And perfect. Go and gaze upon it and marvel.

52 Songs #17 - Blondie, Fan Mail

This week: Fan Mail, Blondie, from the lp Plastic Letters, released in 1977.

So at the same time I was listening to Mott the Hoople and Queen, I was also discovering the NYC punk scene. I still have the original lp of Plastic Letters, which I think I bought at Bleeker Bob's around 1979 or so. Something about these early Blondie records really appealed to me, although in general I'm not a big fan of the guy-band-fronted-by-woman concept; maybe it was because Debbie wrote songs, making it clear that Blondie was her and Chris Stein's band. "Fan Mail", despite its dense lyrics, spoke to me about the kind of fannish hero worship I was just starting to engage in. (And still do. Still available to be Steve Merchant's girlfriend!) This song always makes me remember those times when I stayed awake too long, listening to loud music, and I got dem ol' teenage angst blues again.

Great guitars, too.

52 Songs #16 - It Ain't Easy When You Fall, Ian Hunter

This week: It Ain't Easy When You Fall, Ian Hunter, from the lp Ian Hunter, released in 1975.

Another legacy from my brother. He was lucky enough to see Mott the Hoople in NYC in 1974, when Queen opened for them, and we listened to a lot of Mott - and later, Ian Hunter's solo stuff - for many years after that. His first solo album began his long collaboration with Mick Ronson and this song shows off the kind of anthemic, honest music they were capable of. The lyrics touch on loss, and loneliness, and isolation, but end with a flash of hope. Listen all the way through the spoken word part.

I only saw him & Ronson once, opening for the Kinks in, um, 1979 or 1980, and they fucking rocked. I haven't followed what old Ian's been up to lately, but he's got a great website and is still recording and preforming. And damn: he's 70 years old!

52 Songs #15 - The Monkees, Angel Band

This week: The Monkees, Angel Band, from the lp Missing Links Vol. 3, released in 1996.

You knew we'd get around to the Monkees eventually, didn't you? Or at least Nesmith. Anyway, this Michael Nesmith production comes from the compilation of unreleased stuff called Missing Links Vol 3. As you might guess from the title, they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find enough shit to make a record, so this comp includes things like "Kellogg's Jingle" and "Love to Love (Alternate Mix)", for which no one waited with bated breath. However, there are a few Nesmith gems on it, and this is one.

Note that he didn't write Angel Band; it's a traditional Appalachian/bluegrass hymn and has been recorded many times by many artists, including the Stanley Brothers and Emmylou Harris. Nez' version is rather overblown here, with too much orchestration, but I like his vocal performance. I don't know why he chose to do this song, but it's an interesting exercise in production and you can see what he was aiming for: a grand, showy song without a trace of subtlety.

Now, on the other end of the spectrum, listen to this version, recorded in 1969 in Arkansas as part of a folk song collection. Nez only wishes he could be this honest. I still get chills every time I hear it.

52 Song #14 - Queen, The Night Comes Down

This week: Queen, The Night Comes Down, from the lp Queen , released in 1973.

I was a little too young to appreciate this album when it was released, but again, my big brother's musical taste made it possible for me to discover it a few years later. It is no exaggeration to say I was obsessed with Queen for a long time; they were the first "real" concert I ever went to at age 12, and I paid a stupid amount of money to join the British Queen fanclub for many years. I wonder if I still have all that stuff!

So, from Queen's first wacky album, please enjoy this song. It is so English. It has acoustic guitars, falsetto vocals, and amazing harmonies on the guitar (the Queen trademark). I found out recently that this song was actually a demo that they included on the record - the take was so good that they didn't bother to re-record it. The album version is a little cleaned up; this version is the demo and to me sounds just a little rougher, and has some kind of nervous energy that got flattened out in the lp mix.

Why has Brian May turned into such a cranky old man? He used to be such fun.

This week: Mark Knopfler, Wild Theme, from the soundtrack lp Local Hero, released in 1983.

I was thinking about the movie Local Hero the other day and I remembered how wonderful Mark Knopfler's soundtrack is. If you haven't seen the movie, I don't think I can explain how sweet and quirky it is, or how you can fall in love with Scotland via Peter Riegert. But the music is the thing that ties it all together, and captures the longing for a magical place you passed through once in your life. Wow, that's pretty sappy! But listen to this and you'll know what I mean. Knopfler's guitar playing is, of course, stellar.

For the record, I went to Spanish City because it was mentioned in a Dire Straits song.

52 Songs #12 - Dukes of the Stratosphear, Pale and Precious

Do you know about the Dukes of the Stratosphear? No? OK, go here and read this.

I had been an XTC fans for a long time and was thrilled when they released this stuff; we played the records - RECORDS, cos they were only released as lps at first - in the record store all the time. Each track is such a deft homeage/parody/infusion of specific bands and sounds of the 1960s - you can spend hours figuring out where certain hooks and vocal lines came from. But I've picked the most obvious example: this is pure Beach Boys, and just as good as the original. Andy Partridge has such a lovely voice on this track - sweet and honest without being overly respectful. Things really get moving at about the 2:30 mark. And there's a theramin (I think).

52 Songs #11 - Shaggy, Oh Carolina

This week: Shaggy, Oh Carolina, released in 1993.

I think I heard Oh Carolina on the radio while I was still in grad school at UC Berkeley and I was instantly hooked by the dance-hall echoey mix and the shambling beat. I hadn't listened to new music since I left the record store in 1989 so I had no idea who the hell Shaggy was (and still didn't for a long time - Mr. Boombastic came out in 1995 and I don't think I heard it till it was in some commercial about 5 years ago - jesus I'm old). But I had listened to a lot of reggae and ska and Jamaican dance hall and I knew a good thing when I heard it. As with many classic songs, like Louie Louie, the lyrics are mysterious, tongue-twisting, and superbly executed. Special info: in the wiki entry on Shaggy, they describe his bullfrog voice as "sub-baritone", but he doesn't actually talk like that when he's not singing.

Anyway, I managed to track down a copy of it on cassette of British singles and listened to it a LOT in my car. And forced my friends to listen to it too. And now it's your turn.

PS. Found a nice interview where he says that homophobia is stupid. Yay!

This week: Bowling for Soup, Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day (Theme Song) from the LP Phineas and Ferb, released in 2009.

OK, so you know I'm a freak for Phineas and Ferb - and honestly, who isn't? If you've seen it, you know that it's the most awesome cartoon on television right now. Part of its appeal is the music, as they have a new song (sometimes two) every week, in addition to the kick-ass theme song and a few other recurring tunes. I don't think I'd ever heard anything by Bowling for Soup - well, not on purpose, anyway - but I love this song, especially in this full version. It reminds me of a less-cynical Green Day (or maybe even Cheap Trick) - same power pop chords and major harmonies, and really fun lyrics. And who could disagree with the sentiment? Seize the day and make this the best day ever!

PS. The rest of the soundtrack is great too. Squirrels in my pants!

This week: The Scofflaws, William Shatner (live version) from the LP Live! Vol 1, released in 1996. This track is NSFW!

I can't remember where I heard it, but it's true: Ska is reggae played fast by white people. The Scofflaws were/are an East Coast ska band who had their heyday in the mid-80s and early 1990s. I wonder if I ever saw them live during my days at the record store - certainly I saw the Toasters, another ska band in which some of their members played. Their records are good but the live stuff is so much better, as you can tell by this recording of the CLASSIC song about Bill. We've used this song on the Look At His Butt podcast many times (and also in our live show). It should totally be Bill's theme music, and it should play whenever he walks into the room.

The Scofflaws are still playing live, apparently. I've love to let them know how much we dig this song, and make sure it's OK that we keep playing it on the show. He IS the sexiest fuckin' skinhead in the galaxy!

52 Songs #8: Pete Townshend Behind Blue Eyes Demo

This week: Pete Townshend, Behind Blue Eyes (Demo Version), from the album Lifehouse Chronicles, Lifehouse Demos (Disc 1). Recorded in 1970 and released in 2000 on the first two discs of a 6 CD box set.

There was a time in my life when I had return address labels which said "Pete Townshend is God". (Later I changed this to "Pete Townshend is Bald".) I think I was about 16 when I started listening to Tommy and Quadrophenia, courtesy of my brother, who has impeccable taste in music. Quad, especially, spoke to me in deep ways that I had never experienced before and I thought that Pete Townshend might really understand what was going on in my head. Of course, it wasn't until many years later that I realized it was the other way around. Loving the 'orrible 'oo was something I shared with my soul-sister Jan and my best friend April. This included many, many viewings of "The Kids Are Alright" and seeking out rare tracks whenever possible. I don't remember where I bought it - maybe someone even traded it to me - but I first heard Pete's demo tracks for Who's Next on a vinyl bootleg called The Genius of Pete Townshend.

These tracks are amazing. They are so simply yet expertly crafted, and you can see how they changed and became Who's Next. But the raw emotions here, along with Pete's plantive, soulful voice, make listening to them an incandescent thing. I used to play that record with the headphones on and just LISTEN. Hard. I encourage you to do the same.

This week: Ginger Mayerson, Viola and Piano Composition, performed and recorded in 1991. Regular listeners to the I Read Comics podcast know that I am enamored of Ginger's music. We became friends back in the late 16th century, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I realized she was a talented composer as well as being a fantastic writer. She's been letting people download her music for free, in the hopes of raising the level of class in society in general; now you can have it all on one beautiful CD, designed by the fabulous Brad Rader.

This selection is a soothing yet energetic piece for viola and piano. I've used parts of it in the show, and now you can hear the whole thing. Ordering the CD is so easy, there's really no excuse for not buying one right now. You won't regret it. The music will make you think. My life isn't all power pop and Kiwi melodies, you know.

52 Songs #6: Flight of the Conchords Bus Driver's Song

This week: Flight of the Conchords, Bus Driver's Song from the LP Folk The World Tour, released in 2002. My path to the Conchords was a long and windy one. It started, innocently enough, with the Lord of the Rings movies, and my geeky desire to know all the trivia about them (this included watching all the extra features on all the DVDs). from there I discovered Figwit, sometime after The Two Towers, and I was thrilled to see him have some speaking lines in Return of the King. More research showed that Bret wasn't just an actor, and eventually I watched hours and hours of You Tube videos, and got an actual Kiwi person to send me Folk the World Tour from a record store in NZ.

Oh, they're famous and famously hip now, but out of all their songs I prefer this one. It's funny and sweet and sad, and even though it's stuffed with Kiwi-only jokes, anyone can see Tony is just like any guy from any small town around the world. A lovely melody and rather Finn-ish harmonies on the chorus and the bridge, don't you think? BTW, if you like FotC and haven't heard the BBC radio series, you must get it. Neil Finn is in it and he's hilarious.

52 Songs #5: Split Enz History Never Repeats

This week: Split Enz - History Never Repeats, released in 1981. Some Wikipedia stuff here.

I discovered Split Enz when MTV started showing their videos; "History Never Repeats" was one of the first videos to be shown, ever. I immediately got hooked, bought Waiata, taped it (don't forget, home taping killed the music industry), and listened to it A LOT. Thus began my relationship with the Finn Brothers. Neil wrote this one and sings lead. Don't you love the guitar hook? It's so anthemic! This song is all energy, crashing along to the lovely a capella vocals near the end.

I saw Split Enz live at the P.O.P. festival in Philadelphia in 1982; Squeeze was the headliner (they were boring - might as well have just put on the record); other bands included Duran Duran (yay!), Third World (yay!), Bush Tetras (bad), and of course the boys from NZ. Split Enz kicked all kinds of ass. Tim did backflips. How can you top that?

I've seen Crowded House a lot, and the Finns on various occasions, but nothing will ever beat the Enz in their prime.

52 Songs #3: Re-Flex The Politics of Dancing

And now for a REAL change of pace. I ran a record store from 1984-1989 and my musical tastes (and collection of vinyl) was entirely shaped by that experience. Consequently, I have a real fondness for this type of EXTREMELY 80s music. This one-hit wonder band was one of my favorites.

This week: Re-Flex: The Politics of Dancing, released in 1983. I don't I ever got to see them in person (which is quite something, as I saw a LOT of one-hit wonders back them, including Men Without Hats), but my best friend and I fixated on this album and listened to it over and over again. Like the best 80s synthopop, it's got a driving beat, overwrought vocals, and a fantastic hooky chorus. I'd give a a solid 10, because it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

This week's song is the tune "Whaling", written by Dave Dobbyn, and here performed by Neil and Tim Finn. This version is from 1988 and was recorded at KCRW when the boys did acoustic performances of a bunch of songs. After many years of listening to Finn music, I can confidently say that I prefer Neil and Tim together over pretty much anything that they've done solo. They are each musical geniuses, but when they are together, it's magic. Just listen to the harmonies on this song, and how they make the words sway and roll to the wave-like rhythm of the song. Just magic, I tell you...

OT: Fashion advice to Steve Merchant

Although I love him deeply, I really must offer some fashion advice a la Stacy and Clinton.

Steve: The beard and glasses are a good combination - you look very serious and even kind of tough. But please - lose the polo shirts. First, orange is a terrible color for you and only makes you look paler. Second, you're too tall for off the rack polo shirts. Your arms are longer than the average guy's, and the sleeves of said polo shirt end up hitting you halfway down your bicep and you look like you can't afford clothes that fit and WE KNOW THAT'S NOT TRUE. I've seen you wearing polo shirts in a lot of different photos and they NEVER look right on you. Especially when you buy them one size up to get longer sleeves - that strategy won't work and you know it.

For the sake of me and all the other Smerch fangirls out there, just have your clothes custom-made for you. I promise I'll buy the Extras DVD set to make it happen.

Wolverine: Gayest Ever?

OK, I cheated a little. The title is really "Is 'Wolverine' the most homoerotic superhero movie ever?", by Tim Stack at EW, and it goes like this:

True confession: I see the gay in everything. It's a gift and a curse, much like Haley Joel Osment's ability to chat with the dead in The Sixth Sense. After sitting through Wolverine this past weekend, I believe this flick to be the gayest comic book movie ever. It felt like an issue of Men's Health come to life, albeit with more adamantium. First, the gorgeous Hugh Jackman is shirtless for a good portion of the film -- he even has a naked fight scene! And he squares off against a shirtless (and similarly ripped) Ryan Reynolds at one point. Secondly, Wolverine's job as a lumberjack allows him to wear some very 1970s gay-friendly tight jeans, leather jackets, and flannel shirts, unbuttoned to reveal more than a hint of chest hair. Thirdly, the big sparring between Wolverine and Sabretooth really comes down to two hot guys basically clawing each other with their fingernails. Catfight!

To me, this felt waaay gayer than Joel Schumacher's codpiece- and nipple-enhanced Batman and Robin. What do you think PopWatchers? Anyone else catch a whiff of homoeroticism from all the male eye candy, or am I blowing things out of proportion?

Yes! I haven't even seen this movie but yes!

The best part, really, are the comments, in which many many fanboys get their knickers in a twist and shout NOES NOES WOLVIE IS NOT TEH GAY!! Also a few people who thought that all the shirtlessness etc. was meant to appeal to women. Please note: the people who make superhero movies and comics don't give a fuck about women. And even if they did, they wouldn't have a clue as to what appeals to women. If you doubt this, please review the entire history of Marvel and DC.

Because Battlestar Galactica is all about seeing an impossibly thin woman's musculature and groin, lovingly detailed, and viewed through a cling-film dress. Yep, that does it for me - the dead-eyed face and the almost-glimpse of her crotch - because she's not wearing any underwear! How naughty!

OT: Blogging, bloglines, and stupid bloggers

Skip this if you don't want a rant about entitled young male bloggers.

I use Bloglines to read all the blogs I keep up with, especially the scientific/atheist blogs. I subscribed to one called Edger, a group blog by a bunch of college students, a nice mixture of men and women. I was prepared to make some allowances for the stupidity of youth - I certainly had a lot of half-formed and ill-thought-out theories on the world when I was 22, that's for sure. I'm so glad I wasn't blogging then. There's a lot to be said for not sharing your thoughts with the world.

However, I got annoyed at several blogs that were of the "I'm not a feminist, but..." and even commented on one (and got a response that indicated the blogger had no idea what I was talking about). Today was the last straw. One of the make bloggers posted about "The End of Privacy" (a tired topic to begin with), which contained the line

I think the ladies who read my blog will agree that it says a lot about a girl’s sexuality if she buys her lingerie at Victoria’s Secret vs. Fredrick’s of Hollywood vs. a lesser known lingerie outlet (which always have the trashiest stuff).

Oh my dog. Thanks for that completely dickish blanket statement, dude! You should also keep in mind rule number one: don't refer to women as "ladies", especially when you're going to talk down to them like that. And for future reference, when women do stuff, it's not all about you.

I unsubscribed today and I feel so much better for it.

As a writer and very busy person, I can't live without a notebook by my side. Generally I steal them from other people or from clients, but sometimes I'll actually pay cash money for a nice one. The last fancy one I bought was a little number by John Dickinson, from BlacknRed; I also really really like the Bienfang NoteSketch books, which are lined on the bottom, leaving you free to draw, doodle, and write "I Hate Jim Shooter" in calligraphy on the top half of the page. Not surprisingly, there's a whole website devoted to the search for the perfect black notebook - Black Cover. If you're an office products geek like me, you need to check it out.

The shill part? They're having a contest for some suh-weet Picadilly notebooks, and I want some.

I woke up this morning to find out that Rory Root, owner of Comic Relief, died yesterday. As you guys know, Comic Relief was pretty much the reason I got back into comics and Rory was a big support of my show. I was lucky enough to interview him way back for Show #23 and I loved chatting with him every chance I got. I was just thinking the other day that I needed to check with him about APE and what kind of fun stuff he had planned.

Although Rory had health issues, I always thought he'd be one of those indestructible guys who lived to be 100, laughing and limping and blazing like a ray of sunshine until he was 100.

I am very sad today. To me, Comic Relief will always be the only comic book store that matters. And that was because of Rory.

Update: the new Comic Relief website has pix and a guest book filled with memories of Rory's kindness and generosity.

Why I want to see Iron Man

This is a screencap from the Iron Man spot that's now running on TV. The trailer we saw at WonderCon was awesome, but this clip shows Iron Man performing an incredible Njinsky-level balletic leap as he moves in to smash someone's face. For me, this really captures some of the magic and beauty of the comic and I hope the movie is FULL of images like this.
