Even robots are drawn that way!

Godammit! And this time we can't say "Because Bob Kanigher, that's why". Please observe the INCREDIBLE difference in the way Copper and Gold are portrayed.

Gold: all manly, very robotic looking, ready for action, tall, and buff
Copper: child-like, fragile, off-balance passive pose, looks like she's waiting for some to ask her to dance. all soft rubbery curves

Why? She's a fucking ROBOT. Why? Why?

  • Initially, I was going to suggest that Copper, being a "new" Metal Man (metal person?), would be native, but much like copper the metal (according to Wikipedia), eventually grow into a strong member, becoming an "alloy" with other team members...

...and then I looked at the picture again, and realized that my explanation was wishful thinking on my part.

  • Oh, for Pete's sake -- IT'S A COMIC!!! It's not a book on foreign policy or brain surgery! I think that, while Luba is interesting, her carrying around a hammer is inane, but I did not complain, because IT'S A COMIC!

I think that DC having to announce that major characters dying before the issue is rediculous, but, who cares -- they're just comics!!!

I agree with you -- comics would be far more interesting, and realistic, if people, especially the ladies, were drawn with more than just "eye-candy" in mind; but remember, we're not dealing with a biographical portrayal of Susan B. Anthony or Ayn Rand.

  • I disagree with M there, comics have been flying under the radar to long. I think the dismissing blatant sexism and racism in comics is really a crime.

Comics have been trying to crawl out of the "just for kids" label for decades now. Okay then if you want to play with the big boys you have to face the conequences. That means owning up to what you are putting out there.

And its clear that the message many comics put out is that "women are just fuck toys" that and "Only white people are serious superheroes"

We live in a society that is rather dismisive.

"Yeah comics are being sexist and racist but there just comics, what do you expect?"

"Yeah black people and minoraties live in really bad neighborhoods but what can you do?"

"Yeah we throw people out of hospitals cause our healthcare system sucks but you know what can you do? Its not like its gonna change anytime soon"

"Yeah i could read a newspaper and learn about whats going on in the world but i think i would rather hear about Britney Spears meltdown"

"Yeah all those people died in New Orleans because our goverment fucked up, but i dont live there and its not like i can do anything about it and lets face it most of them were black and poor"

"Yeah our President lead us to war under false pretenses but its like i actually voted and what can i do? I wonder who will win in American Idol?"

  • A. They're the Metal Men. They're caricatures of stereotypical personality types. You contrasted the new girl to Gold, who's an Apollonian ideal. On the other hand, Lead & Tin are male, & both of them are soft, uncertain types.

    B. I want an Ayn Rand biography with a glowing crotch now.
