What I Want In Comics #3

Technically, this would be what I want in a comics movie, but I include it here because I like it so much. Is there Wolverine/Cyclops slash out there?

Presenting "Brokeback Mutant":

  • Hi Eric,

I was a fan of your Spider-man run, and was an always eager reader of your column, but you are really on a hiding to nowhere with this train of thought. Really, leave it now. You are starting to embarrass yourslf.

What women in comics wear is not the big issue. It is how they are drawn, how they are shown, and how they are written. These are stories for men by men. For a point in case - to quote you (out of context)... "I mean, there have been a number of gruesome torture scenes involving ripe young females squirming and arching their bodies in poses designed to titillate".

This tells us what? That young women are fair game? Your use of words is telling ("ripe young females"?). What if that read "I mean, there have been a number of gruesome torture scenes involving ripe young boys squirming and arching their bodies in poses designed to titillate" - is that appropriate? How many young boys has this been done to in comics - for titillaton alone? None.

This is not anything to do with "a few women [who] get bent out of shape and pissed off at the comic book industry as a whole", but to do with how women are perceived ...

YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO OBJECTIFY WOMEN! In the same way I as a white, middle class atheist has no right to demonise Islamists. I have no idea what it is like to be one, so I have no right to pretend to write for them. I, quite frankly leave it to the experts.

Unrealism is not a right to take pot shots at a section of the community you cannot be bothered to consult. Talk to, and learn from them. If there are no stories from those groups, take a pot shot at the white male obsessed, WASP, middle-classes. Something you have real experience of.

  • Hi Lene,

    As reponded to: http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=ofo&article=2477

Sorry for the cack handed posting! But just got so annoyed with his constant self-jusification.

Love the podcast and have been listening since number one - it is one of 3 that I archive (along with Ricky Gervais and Melvin Bragg).

    All the best,

  • There are tons of Wolverine/Cyclops slash on the net, ever since the first movie. I lost the link, but I remember that there was a X-men movie slash archive (And I think that was the name) and roughly 50% of it was Wolvie/Cyclops, with a few Magento/Xavier and Jean/Storm in the mix... but mostly, Wolvie/Cyclops.
